714 Participating towns in Malaysia & Australia :

Facebook event page : https://www.facebook.com/events/416717311707374/

On Saturday 14th July  5PM(*a few places on 13th  and 15th July at different time), a variety of creative actions will be taken up by concerned citizens, civil society groups and political parties in various states to show their opposition to the Lynas rare earth project in Malaysia.
Mr Tan Bun Teet, the spokesperson for SMSL and a Kuantan resident said,
Each and every one of us have toiled and worked hard to better our life and to provide for our family.  We are citizens of Malaysia – the rakyat - have been paying taxes to build our nation.  Yet we are now expected to live with a giant rare earth plant that pays no tax.”
“On top of that, Lynas will be leaving behind huge amount of radioactive waste and mountains of contaminated waste sludge.  Our air, our water and our food risk being contaminated by Lynas’ waste discharges.  Several industries may be affected with adverse economic consequences. This is not the deal we have worked for!” added Mr Tan

  1. Correct me if I am wrong but....

For a safer, cleaner and greener world.....

DONT WE NEED RARE EARTHS? for solar and wind and energy efficient lighting?

Rare earth used in so many beneficial products for a cleaner and greener world.

    You guys are such HYPOCRITES!!

    Ignorant, backward furless monkeys.

    1. Yes a cleaner and safer future can do with green tech BUT it has no place for a pollution risk rare earth plant near a populated area, only 3.5 km from the South China Sea where locals fish and tourists frequent, especially when Lynas' rare earth refinery is actually sitting on a peat mangrove swamp which is supposed to be a conservation area becuase of its high carbon duoxide sequestration function and a biodiversity hotspot. Besides, the water table in the peat land is less than a metre from the ground, risking contamination from the Lynas plant.

Yes rare earth is vital for green tech BUT it SHOULD BE LOCATED near Mt WELD IN Western Australia, not in Malaysia where environmental safeguard is poor with a nasty legacy from a previous rare earth plant!

    2. There is no water for processing at Mt Weld. Do your research.

Also, Malaysia has a large electronics Industry, Australia does not. You need rare earth to support your own industry. Your computers and consumer electronics, if you use any of these then you are part of the problem.

YOU buy coal from us to produce your electricity, do you think we should take back the air pollution (which is more radioactive than Lynas) and the solid and liquid waste as well?

Rare earth is only an issue because mearly all the people protesting never heard about it more than 3 years ago.

Through scaremongering they think it is the worst thing in the world when in actual fact it is well below background radiation levels. REMEMBER FACTS??

      BELOW BACKGROUND LEVELS. FACT!

    3. O CHen,

Lats time I checked it was in an industrial estate, not a residential zoned land.

All industries pollute. Do you know this?

      ALL INDUSTRIES POLLUTE.

From your local waste water treatment plant in Kuantan spewing millions of effluent water EVERY DAY into the Bolok River, to the other chemical/refinery plants in Kuantan. Did you know this?

Who would want to live in an industrial zone?

The fisherman (only a few) will not be affected. The environment will not be affected, the people of Kuantan and Malaysia will benefit extremely well from this advanced processing facility.

  4. I dont understand SMSL.. you are given a chance to explain at PSC and you refused. You loose your appeal to the Minister. All because SMSL DOES NOT HAVE FACTS TO SUPPORT but merely fear mongering and reasons which I don't understand.. I support Lynas and stop SMSL.

  5. Mr Tan would be better remaining silent and have people think he is a misguided fool than publishing false and misleading information here proving them right.

    1. Together you stand. With your head in the sand.

Ignore science, ignore facts, yet you claim to understand!

  7. There's always some who can't see the forest for the trees. There's no dispute about developing rare earth or it's use, but about managing its processing. Have it go through the approvals, tests and monitoring in US and Australia, and process it there! Manage the waste in those countries itself, and not leave it in someone else's backyard.

  8. I cant see the trees for the palm oil plantations.

FYI - it is being processed in Australia ready for export and seperation. It is not all being processed in Malaysia.

Also, the waste material is even below International shipping standards for hazardous substances.

So what is the problem? What will make you understand?
